Underneath Naples

For a long time the area underneath Naples has been a tuff pit, the stones extracted in this enormous cave served as material to build the city. Therefore below the street level there is plenty of tunnels, caves and ravines. This place called “Napoli Sotterranea” (Underneath Naples) tell us about a parallel life of the city that takes place under our feet. In the underground, people lived an other life exploiting this “other city” in many different ways, for example as an air-raid shelter during the second world war. The Underneath Naples is also the place where all the ghosts of Naples are concentrated: trues and falses, goods and bads. If while you are visiting this narrow and damp alley you’ll hear a strange yelling, don’t panic, you aren’t going crazy: It’s just the “munaciello” (a little ghost dressed as a monk).
