Venus and Diana's Temples - Phlegraean fields

They're not temples, but everyone thinks they are

The finding of a statue representing Venus made people taught that it was a temple, but this was wrong, actually it was a spa pool, but it’s still called Temple of Venus. The Romans never taught to use this pool as a temple, at sure when they was relaxing in the warm waters of this spa they didn’t think about fulfilling their gods. The pool has a dome where some frescoes are still visible. Few meters away from this there’s an other temple dedicated to the hunting goddess Diana. Even this one isn’t a temple, it’s a part of the huge villa that the emperor Alessandro Severo built for his mother Giulia Mamea. Nowadays this building it’s into a private holding but if you look in direction of the rocky wall you’ll see it, laid down on the scrubs.
